Ed Earl is the principal of Priority 1 Projects based
in San Diego. Ed offers more than 25 years of construction experience and
represents owners on a wide variety of construction projects. He is also a
business coach working exclusively with contractors to help them increase both
their profitability and enjoyment in their construction company.

At the NAHB
International Builders’ Show® (IBS), Ed will present two topics, “Building
Happy Homeowners: How Clear Communications & Managing Expectations Leads to
More Referrals”
(with an encore presentation of this topic, too) and “Tips
for Managing Customer Expectations.”
We
caught up with Ed to learn a bit more about him in advance of the show.

NAHB: What are
you are looking forward to the most at IBS?
ED: Specifically,
seeing the new products in home automation. It is so much fun seeing all of
the cool new products that make our homes smarter and more efficient.

NAHB: What is
the best advice you can give industry professionals looking to manage customer
expectations?
ED: Managing
customer expectations needs to start at the very beginning of a project, well
before construction gets underway. From the first meeting with a potential
client, you can manage their expectations by providing them with a better understanding
of the unique characteristics of a construction project compared to most other
products that they purchase in today’s market.

NAHB: What
industry trends are you most excited about?
ED: Hi-tech
modular homes that maximize efficiency by creating multi-purpose living spaces
with sliding walls and moveable panels. For example, a dining room can be
transformed into a rec room, or a guest room can turn into a home
office. Virginia Tech is doing some amazing work in this area.

NAHB: Do you
have a “must see” spot in San Diego you’d recommend to out-of-town visitors?
ED: In my
opinion, the most amazing attraction is our weather. Any activity is a “must
do” as long as it is outside: a beach visit, a trail hike or just spending
an afternoon in the park, especially during the winter when much of the country
is under snow and it is 70 degrees and sunny in San Diego.

NAHB: Describe
your favorite weekend getaway.
ED: I
enjoy visiting other cities to attend a professional sporting event. My
son and I have travelled to various places to watch a football bowl game or a
baseball championship game.

NAHB: In three
words, describe your prediction of the building industry in 2017.
ED: Smaller is
better.
