Bobby Mink has served in various roles over the years, including project manager, vice president of operations and chief operations officer, and has managed and grown several startup home building organizations. Now as the owner of Choice Consulting and Management, LLC, he coaches business owners on how to grow their companies with proven principles that help both individuals and organizations reach their full potential.
At the 2022 NAHB International Builders’ Show® (IBS), Bobby will present two sessions: A Master Workshop, “Essential Tools for Healthy Business Growth: Building a Foundation for Profitability and Sanity” and “9 Disciplines of Great Superintendents: How to Be On Schedule, On Budget & On Quality.” We caught up with him to get a sneak peek into his sessions.
NAHB: Without giving too much away, what will people learn at your sessions?
BOBBY: The “Essential Tools for Healthy Business Growth” session will provide the basics for builders so they can take the next step from where they are to where they want to be. It will help them with navigating growth, increasing profit and creating greater efficiencies within their organization.
The “9 Disciplines of Great Superintendents” session will give field managers the insight and tools to help them be more productive, efficient and profitable.
NAHB: What do you see as being the biggest challenge the industry faces right now?
BOBBY: Creating a vocational training process for non-college talent. There are 40 or 50 trade partners that touch each home built, and we need more talent entering the trades. We, as an industry, need to figure out a way to connect non-college students to trade partner industries across the country.
NAHB: What advice would you give someone who’s attending the Builders’ Show for the first time?
BOBBY: Come to IBS with a purpose. Know the products you want to see and the vendors/suppliers you want to meet. Determine what topics you want to learn that can help you and your organization.
NAHB: What’s the best hangout at IBS and why?
BOBBY: For me, the best place to hang out is the education area. It is a great place to network and have more conversations about topics that are being discussed. It also offers the opportunity to learn more about what companies are going through.
NAHB: What’s the last book you read?
BOBBY: How the Mighty Fall: And Why Some Companies Never Give In (Good to Great, 4) by Jim Collins. He makes a statement in the book that we, as leaders, owners and managers, should ask 50% more questions than we make statements. If you’d like to unpack more of what that might mean for you and your organization, find me at the show and we’ll chat.
NAHB: What is your secret talent that most don’t know about?
BOBBY: I am a music educator major with a minor in voice. I’ve been singing since I was a kid.
NAHB: In three words or less, what’s your prediction for the building industry in 2022?
BOBBY: Difficult but profitable.
