Get to Know Deana
We caught up with Deana to get a sneak peek into her Master Workshop and get to know her a little better.
What information or actionable takeaways can attendees expect to walk away with from your session?
How to build healthy and high-performance homes, profitably and attainably. Attendees will learn from the nation’s leading healthy and high-performance home building experts, as they share data and lessons learned for taking building science to the next level.
What are you most looking forward to at IBS?
Connecting with some of the best in the industry in real life so we can brainstorm and share ideas.
What advice would you give to someone attending the Builders’ Show for the first time?
Find 2 – 3 sessions per day that you’re most interested in and prioritize those because you’ll never make it to all of them.
Where is the best place to be at IBS? Why?
As a self-proclaimed design geek, I have to say Design Central. There is no place better to see the latest and greatest in production home design.
What is the most interesting 2023 industry trend?
I discussed with our army of JBREC trend trackers, and the one we felt should be celebrated and recognized is the increased attention paid to the impact we’re making on the planet (sustainability) and the lives of the occupants of the homes (healthy homes) we build. The materials, methods and strategies that are being used have come a long way and are getting exponentially more attainable.
The industry has changed so much in the last five years. What changes do you think we’ll see in the next five years?
I hope that we’ll start to see (1) more modular and prefab construction, (2) more environmentally friendly practices and (3) more diversity in the industry. We are seeing a lot of moving pieces that are falling into line for all three of these items but prefab and modular seems like it could take off any day now! Interestingly, in many ways modular construction is more environmentally friendly and diversifies our industry.
What do you think is the biggest challenge in the industry right now?
The velocity of change is accelerating and there are multiple factors (labor, economy, supply, regulations, etc.) that are pushing and pulling all at the same time. It makes staying on top of everything more difficult. If I had to pick one challenge that stands out the most, it would be keeping up with the constant shifts in the economy, it’s been extra hectic in the 2nd half of 2022.
