Nineteen pre-show courses will be offered before the start of the 2019 NAHB International Builders’ Show® (IBS). These half-, one- and two-day courses give you a chance to dive deeper into specific industry topics and to increase your skill set.
The Pre-show Courses offered on Monday, February 18 are as follows:
Winning the Time Game | 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
This half-day course is designed to help superintendents develop a deeper skill level to increase personal efficiency and productivity. You will learn specific time-saving tips and how to achieve a better balance between what’s urgent with what’s important.
Train the Trainer | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
This one-day course is designed for building industry professionals who wish to teach NAHB educational instructor-led classroom courses, industry experts or experienced teachers who have had no formal education in training, and any trainers who want a refresher to improve their classroom training skills. You will learn the skills needed to effectively teach in the NAHB Education curriculum. NOTE: Class size is limited to 10 participants.
Principles of Residential Marketing: Strategy & Implementation Classroom | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
This one-day course (Part II) will help you understand the importance of developing and analyzing a marketing strategy, and lead you through hands-on exercises for developing and implementing a community’s marketing and sales strategy. NOTE: The online course (Part I) must be completed separately and is a prerequisite for taking this classroom course.
Marketing and Sales for Building Professionals | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Today’s customers are demanding and selective and, thanks to the world of technology, they are also well educated. So how do you stand out from the crowd? This one-day course will provide an overview of the many types of marketing and sales tools available to help build your unique brand, so you can engage potential customers, clients and referral partners to choose your product or remodeling services.
Construction Contracts and Laws | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Many construction or remodeling companies are too small to hire full-time legal staff so it’s important to understand basic contract law. In this one-day course, you will learn about sales agreements, construction contracts, remodeling contracts, warranties and subcontractor agreements, including mandatory and optional provisions. Special emphasis will also be given to troubleshooting contracts from a detrimental position.
Details & Solutions for Livable Homes and Aging In Place (CAPS III) | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
This one-day course builds on the CAPS I and CAPS II courses (which are prerequisites for this course) by introducing design solutions and techniques for professionals whose clients require specialized design and equipment to live and thrive comfortably in their homes. It will cover whole-house product specification and installation techniques, and also include practical, hands-on activities.
Business Accounting and Job Costing: A Road Map to Profitability | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
To properly manage a business, builders and remodelers need to understand accounting principles and job-costing procedures. This one-day course will provide the basics of financial planning, budgeting, construction business accounting, job cost systems and financial options that will enable you to track and analyze costs of goods, overhead and reports/records to be maintained.
Coaching: Creating Standards of Excellence | 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
This half-day course is designed to help leaders develop and improve coaching skills that will motivate and provide support to your team for top performance. You will explore the characteristics of great coaching and learn a three-step process for effective coaching conversations.
