What does it take to transform an existing home into a more energy-efficient, high performance home for today’s homeowners?
For The New American Remodel (TNAR) 2027, the answer starts with taking the home down to the studs and rethinking how the entire house works together.
Located in Henderson, NV, TNAR 2027 is undergoing a comprehensive redesign and modernization focused on health, wellness and energy efficiency. The project is one of the two official show homes of the 2027 NAHB International Builders’ Show® (IBS), giving registered attendees an up-close look at how an existing home can be transformed through thoughtful design, advanced building practices and high-efficiency systems.
A Whole-Home Approach to Efficiency
Rather than focusing on individual upgrades, this remodel is a holistic approach.
The goal is to make the remodeled home 30–35% more energy efficient than the original home through improvements to the thermal envelope, windows, HVAC, insulation and water heating, including:
- High-efficiency windows.
- Increased insulation.
- A more efficient HVAC system.
- All-electric heat pumps.
- Improved water-heating efficiency.
- All-LED lighting.
- Upgrades designed to improve the home’s overall thermal performance.
Together, these improvements will create a home that is more efficient on paper and performs better in real-world conditions.
Heat Pumps Designed for the Nevada Climate
A key part of the remodel is the HVAC system.
Medea HVAC made it possible to incorporate all-electric heat pumps, a technology well suited to Nevada’s hot climate. The existing air-conditioning system is also being upgraded to a more efficient system.
These improvements are part of the larger strategy to reduce energy use while creating a more comfortable indoor environment.
The point of the whole-home approach: Efficiency is about using less energy and creating a home that works better for the people who live in it.
Looking Beyond the Walls
Health and wellness are also central to TNAR 2027.
By addressing the home’s systems, envelope and efficiency as interconnected pieces, the project demonstrates how a major remodel can go beyond cosmetic updates. The result is intended to be a more comfortable, efficient and high performing home from the inside out.
For homeowners and remodeling professionals, the approach offers a valuable lesson: The biggest opportunities in a remodel may be behind the walls.
Building for Performance
The TNAR team is also pursuing certification through the National Green Building Standard™ (NGBS).
As construction progresses, inspections are evaluating key components of the home, including the thermal envelope. The goal is to ensure the home’s efficiency measures are installed, executed and verified.
A Major Remodel on a Major Deadline
Transforming an existing home down to the studs is a significant undertaking under any circumstances but finishing in time for its Builders’ Show debut raises the stakes considerably.
The Primaris Custom Homes team has worked tirelessly to keep the project moving to bring the TNAR 2027 vision to life.
The result will give IBS attendees a rare opportunity to see a major remodel in person and explore the decisions, technologies and building practices behind the transformation.
