When it comes to blending old-school craftsmanship with next-generation tech, Luke Thomas knows how to bridge both worlds. As co-founder of H&L Design and Build, a high-end residential remodeling firm that self-performs every phase of the design, architecture and build process, Luke understands that the future of building isn’t about replacing people with technology but is about amplifying human expertise.

At IBS 2026, Luke is bringing that philosophy to the stage in two power-packed sessions.

Turning Tech into a Builder’s Super-Tool

In AI in Action: How Builders Are Using AI to Boost Efficiency & Client Satisfaction, Luke explores how builders and remodelers can integrate AI into estimating, scheduling and client communication to eliminate repetitive work and make faster, smarter decisions. His message is clear: AI isn’t here to take over — it’s here to free you up to focus on leadership, mentoring and client relationships.

In Your Secret Sales Weapon: Using Back-Office Tech to Win Bigger, Better Jobs, Luke dives into the untapped potential of back-office tech — the systems that often stay behind the scenes but can be a game-changer in the sales process. He’ll share how builders can use their project management tools to demonstrate reliability, professionalism and trustworthiness to clients.

From Countertops to Culture

Luke’s journey into the building industry wasn’t a straight path. After a few attempts in an architecture program, he found his footing in countertop fabrication and kitchen remodeling.

Then came a two-decade detour into non-profit ministry, where Luke honed his leadership, organization and communication skills — managing teams, mentoring people and building systems that worked. When life took another turn during the 2020 pandemic, Luke and his wife, Hannah, invested their savings into creating H&L Design and Build — and never looked back.

Today, Luke’s passion lies in helping builders blend craftsmanship with innovation and his IBS Education sessions promise to give attendees a roadmap for doing just that.

Why Luke Loves IBS

For Luke, IBS is all about the conversations.

“IBS brings together people who are passionate about growth and innovation — builders, remodelers and makers who aren’t afraid to evolve,” he says. “Every year I walk away with new perspectives, better systems and a stronger network of people who care about raising the bar in our industry.”

His advice for first-time attendees? Plan your must-see sessions but leave room for surprises.

“Some of the best insights come from hallway chats and booth demos you didn’t expect,” he adds. “And always follow up after the show — the real value comes from the connections you keep.”

Looking Ahead

Luke sees a future where AI-assisted craftsmanship defines the next generation of builders.

“AI is becoming the builder’s ultimate performance-enhancing tool. It’s not magic; it’s leverage,” he says. “The only side effect is time gained — time to think strategically, lead intentionally and deliver more value to your teams and clients.”

But he’s also quick to point out the biggest challenge in the industry right now: adoption without alignment.

“Tech alone doesn’t solve problems; leadership does,” Luke emphasizes. “When we use tools like AI with intention and clarity, we don’t lose our craft — we elevate it.”
