New for the 2017 NAHB International Builders’ Show® (IBS) is a
pair of classrooms just off the show floor that will feature all hands-on,
interactive learning to host two new types of sessions: Builder Clinics and
Tech Bytes. These programs will be offered in short 20- to 30-minute segments
and will be repeated a few times throughout the week to allow for flexibility
in your schedule.
Builder Clinics: How-Tos to Take Your Homes from Standard to Stand-Out
Here are the facts (that you already know): Your customers
want their homes to be personalized, and with that, cookie-cutter baseboard
trims and window casings just don’t cut it these days. They expect more—dynamic
interiors and finishes that give a high-end appearance and add depth and
character to their home. Through a series of live, hands-on demonstrations, our
new Builder Clinics will show you finish and trim carpentry techniques, tips
and tricks that will give you the ability to create customization to wow your
customers
Led by well-known finish carpenter Gary Striegler, these
clinics will explore best practices for building and installing:
- Pocket & sliding doors
- Site-built cabinets
- Built-ins
- Staircase details
- Wainscot paneling
- Mantels
- Custom trim detail
The way it works
Builder Clinic sessions will offer live demos of various
building techniques with a focus on finish and trim carpentry. These 30- minute
sessions are designed to give you the how-to on a specific carpentry technique
so you can get the tips and tricks you need fast.
Not only will you learn first-hand how to build these
custom features, but Gary will also show you how to do so in a manner that is
friendly to your timeline and your budget. Whether you are a custom builder,
remodeler or specialty tradesman, you’re sure to walk away with tips and tricks
that will impress your clients and set your homes apart from the competition.
Gary Striegler is the president of Craftsman Builders,
Inc.—specializing in millwork and interior details. He is recognized as one of
the industry’s leading finish carpenters. A frequent Fine Homebuilding and Journal
of Light Construction contributor, Gary is also featured in many how-to
videos teaching a variety of finish details.
Tech Bytes: Experience Technology in a
Whole New Way
Tech Bytes sessions are the place to learn about and test
out various social media platforms, virtual reality, video applications, and
more. These sessions are all about hands-on, how-to learning, and we’ve packed
25 Tech Byte presentations into the three-day show. Each presentation will be
interactive and geared to show you the practical side of various tech tools you
may want to consider for your business, including:
- Drones
- Interactive sales kiosks
- Virtual reality/3D Tours
- Social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn, Snapchat) - Smart home technology
- Apps
- And more!
The Tech Byte room is multi-dimensional. First you will
notice the large presentation stage where the sessions will take place, but two
other areas of the room are just as important: the small group area will be where
you can bring your own devices to get hands-on experience with the guidance of
experts; and the second area will showcase new gadgets and tech toys, and allow
you to watch demos or learn how they work first-hand.
The way it works
What makes these sessions so exciting is, while there
will be many demos and presentations, a number of hands-on opportunities will
be available so attendees can get up close with the technology and gain guidance
from the subject matter experts. Tech Bytes speakers will start each session
with a short 20- to 30-minute presentation on stage. Afterwards, many will move
to one of the adjoining areas to work directly with people. If a speaker
discusses Advanced
Facebook Tactics, for example, after the presentation they will move to the
small group area to work with participants and answer specific questions.
If you need a quick break from the show floor, take 20 to 30 minutes to catch a Builder Clinic or
Tech Byte in room W230. You will need a Full Registration or One-Day Education
Pass to attend. Explore these sessions and other show activities at BuildersShow.com.
