Meet Our Speakers Series: Dustin Kaehr

Dustin Kaehrv

Dustin Kaehr, M.B.A. is a business coach with over 20 years of experience working with organizations of all sizes to help them with leadership challenges, operations and employee/customer engagement. At the NAHB International Builders’ Show® (IBS) in February, Dustin will present, “Communicating Effectively In Tough Situations.” We caught up with him to get a sneak peek into his session.

NAHB: Without giving too much away, what will people learn at your session, “Communicating Effectively In Tough Situations?”
DUSTIN: We all have tough conversations every day. Some of us have them well—others not so much. We will talk about how those tough conversations do not have to be uncomfortable or cause broken client, employee or even family relationships. I’ve been a high school and college basketball official for nearly 20 years, so we will talk about how dealing with irate coaches relates to the tough conversations they have every day.

NAHB: What do you see as the biggest challenge in the industry at the moment?
DUSTIN: People. It’s always people. Finding good employees and keeping them or even letting go of the ones you know you should. People that lead teams and organizations have to learn how to connect and grow the people around them.

NAHB: What’s the last book you read?
DUSTIN: The Last Arrow: Save Nothing for the Next Life, by Erwin Raphael McManus

NAHB: If you had to work but didn’t need money, what would you choose to do?
DUSTIN: Own a Canadian fishing lodge!

NAHB: If you had unlimited funds to build a house that you’d live in the rest of your life, what are the top three features it would have?
DUSTIN: 1) With four boys in the house (ages 9–15), their bathroom would be like a locker room with tile floors, a drain and a hose hookup to bleach it down! 2) A master suite with a coffee station for my morning brew. 3) A large porch overlooking rolling fields and pastures.

NAHB: What product would you seriously stockpile if you found out they weren’t going to make it anymore?
DUSTIN: Coffee beans from Guatemala and Basil Hayden bourbon.

NAHB: Success quote:
DUSTIN: The path to mediocrity begins with the status quo.

“Communicating Effectively In Tough Situations” will take place Thursday, February 21 from 12:00 – 1:00 PM at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Learn more about the 130+ education sessions and register at BuildersShow.com.
