IBS 2019 Master Session: Avoiding Poor Performing Homes & Profit-Killing Call-Backs

Master Sesssion

What makes you successful as a builder is not the number of homes you build in a year or even how much money you make on the initial sale—it’s the amount of profit that stays in your pocket. Profits and costs aren’t always finished accruing when you turn over the keys. The secret to maximizing your bottom line depends on how well you control your call-back costs.

In the NAHB International Builders’ Show® (IBS) Master Session, “Avoiding Poor Performing Homes & Profit-Killing Call-Backs,” explore the biggest mistakes that designers, builders and the trades make that can lead to expensive call-backs and poor performing homes—and how to overcome them.

Through pictures and examples from job site evaluations, you’ll get a first-hand look at the problems and solutions; gain better insight on building enclosures, water and moisture issues; and identify mistakes that lead to poor energy performance, comfort and IAQ issues so you can proactively avoid them.

In this three-hour advanced session, you will:

  • Identify the top design and construction mistakes contractors and designers make that lead to moisture, comfort or performance-related call-backs.
  • Explore best practices for cost-effective approaches to building homes that are energy efficient and free of moisture-related problems.
  • Discuss the relationships between water and air barriers, moisture vaper transmission, condensation, material permeability and insulation selection.
  • Illustrate how to properly flash windows and doors to meet new code requirements for continuous exterior insulation that results in building durability and optimal water management.
