Dawn Sadler is the founder of Builder Target, an online industry resource that offers tools, tips and tutorials for better online marketing. At IBS 2016, she presented a session on Facebook marketing; we caught up with her earlier this summer, before she took off for a mission trip, to ask her a few questions.
NAHB: What is one thing you enjoyed the most while attending IBS 2016 in Las Vegas?
DAWN: By far, the best part of IBS is seeing the light go off in people’s heads about what’s truly possible with digital media. The resources that builders have today at their fingertips are mind boggling compared to when I started in the industry more than 20 years ago. That “a-ha” moment when people think “I can do this!” is exhilarating for me. IBS is the best place for builders and their teams to feel empowered to improve and scale their business.
NAHB: What is your favorite blog that you read regularly?
DAWN: I like to get information quickly from a lot of different sources, which is why I find the search feature on the social media platform we use incredibly helpful. It’s a fast and efficient way to find the latest on SEO, social media, content marketing, blogging, digital strategy, online advertising and leadership.
NAHB: What is your favorite vacation spot?
DAWN: My husband and I were married in Italy so we still have a fondness for the country, especially Florence and the Amalfi Coast. Though, some of our best getaways are simple, long weekends at the beach. When we lived in California, we enjoyed Pacific Grove. Here on the East Coast, we get away to Montauk when we can, but this summer we’re switching gears a bit and going on a mission trip to Swaziland.
NAHB: Since you live in New York City, what are some go-to recommendations for out-of-town visitors?
DAWN: The best thing to do in the city is to put on some good walking shoes and spend hours exploring. We’ve lived here for nearly four years, and we still do it often. There’s always something new and unexpected to see.
NAHB: Do you have any embarrassing speaking stories you’d care to share?
DAWN: This past January, I was introducing myself to some audience members at IBS before one of my sessions. I asked one young woman, “Do you work for a builder?” She responded, “I am the builder.” This experience was a great reminder that our industry is changing and new voices are constantly emerging. I am excited about the future.
NAHB: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what are three items you’d want with you?
DAWN: A helicopter, a pilot and plenty of fuel.
NAHB: In three words or less, describe your prediction for the building industry in 2016.
DAWN: Advanced strategies win.
